Western Kenya to Experience Blackout Weekend
Saturday 27th March 2021 and Sunday 28th March 2021 there shall be a power blackout in different parts of Western region.
The affected regions would be Kakamega, Kisumu, Busia, Bungoma, Vihiga, Siaya, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira.
Others are: Bomet, Kericho, Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia and Nandi.
Kenya Power has announced that they will switch off electricity supply on the 137kv double circuit Lessos-Lanet transmission line to allow stringing works on the new 220kv transmission line that is meant to improve power supply in Western Kenya.
The new 220kv Olkaria-Lessos-Kibos transmission line that is under construction is expected to stabilize the power supply to the Western Kenya region and address existing supply challenges.
The company, which has a monopoly in electricity distribution, has reported massive losses over the past two financial years.
Two weeks ago, Energy CS Charles Keter and Kenya Power MD Bernard Ngugi were summoned to appear before senators over perennial power outages countrywide.
Kenya Power is also seeking to lower fixed charges, known technically as capacity charges, in contracts signed with electricity-generating companies.
The part of the transmission from 132kv Lesso-Lanet line to 220kv Olkaria-Lesso Kibos line is a project that the government is currently undertaking to strengthen electricity supply across the country.
