The Kisumu county government in collaboration with Safe Water and Aids Project (SWAP) and the University of Illinois completed the construction of a Kshs 2.5 million water project powered by solar at Chuthber, South West Ward in Kisumu West Sub County.

This project, nicknamed ‘Sola Maji’ which will benefit up to 110 households within the region was funded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Sola Maji project is a technology that will embrace solar powered water supply systems to work independently with close to zero running costs.

The water for the project will be sourced from River Mugruk located in the nearby area.

The system uses solar power to produce ozone gas which will then be bubbled through the water collected from River Mugruk so as to kill germs and make the water safe for drinking.

A similar system was installed in small versions in 2019 at Kisian Village, Kisumu and it used to disinfect approximately 40 liters of water in a day.

“This project is a community based sustainable solution to the challenge of provision of safe drinking water to rural communities,” said Mr. Aloice Mwaki, the director of the SWAP project.

Also present were the project committee members and the county water infrastructure officers Ann Kombija and Eng. Reginald Olang.
