In a commitment to realize water coverage of up to 90 percent in a period of 10 years, the County Government of Kisumu has spent a total of KShs 813 million on water projects in the last three years. The major aim of these projects is to ensure the provision of safe, clean and affordable water supply to the residents of Kisumu County.

Salmon Orimba, the County’s water and environment executive said that the county government in collaboration with other partners and an annual allocation of KShs 217 million has drilled up to 60 boreholes around the county.

“The yearly allocation for water projects is KShs 271 million. We have done 20 boreholes each financial year since Governor Nyong’o took over. His agenda is to ensure access to clean and safe water within the shortest possible time.”

The boreholes are distributed in 35 wards with a lot of effort put on Seme and South West Nyakach ward which are often affected by acute water shortages.

The county government has also ensured that water facilities that were rendered obsolete have been rehabilitated for use by residents.

“We have rehabilitated water facilities which were built years back such as Nyakach water supplying system,” said Orimba.

For sustainable and reliable water supply projects, the CEC has said that they will be handed to the Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) for management. However, small water projects will be a mandate of the community management. He reiterated that the people entrusted with the management “are often trained to ensure efficient service delivery to the intended beneficiaries.”
