The Upgrade of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Complex
October 22nd 2020, H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta led the official unveiling ceremony of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Complex in Kisumu, accompanied by Hon. Raila Odinga and Governor Anyang Nyong’o. This was after the commitment of the County Government of 100 million shillings to upgrade it to a world class sports and recreation centre.
The sports ground, formerly known as the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground, was renamed to immortalize the first Vice President of the Republic of Kenya, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
It’s almost two years since it’s official unveiling and the renovation works are at an advanced stages with major works having been completed up to 75 percent. During the last tour in the property by Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o, he ascertained that the works were going on well and would be ready ahead of the official launch before the end of the year.
The sports complex sitting at the heart of the city and holding a great history of the Luo community is expected to be a gem for sports and recreation once the gates are open for public use.
Renovations ranging from civil works, landscaping, rehabilitation and upgrade of play fields such as the football pitch, hockey court and children play area, proper drainage and solar lightning is set to make it a sports complex suitable for hosting international games.
The county government is also ensuring that the rich cultural background is preserved even with the ongoing modern improvements.
The improvement of the recreational center is part of the ongoing initiatives by Governor Nyong’o and his administration to revolutionize the face of the City of Kisumu as it gears to host the Africities Conference in April 2022.
