Kenya suspends flights to and from Somalia
Kenya has suspended flights to and from Somalia, on Tuesday May 11, 2021 according to a notice issued by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
This happened just days after the two countries decided to restore their diplomatic ties to bring back the mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
This mending of ties was confirmed on Thursday 6 May 2021 after a Qatar mediation.
“In taking note of these developments, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs looks forward to further normalisation of relations by the Somali authorities including with regard to trade, communication, transportation, people to people relations and cultural exchanges,” the statement read, thanking Qatar for its efforts to help Somalia and Kenya normalise relations.
Somalia had cut ties with Kenya in December 2020, where they accused Kenya of political interference with Kenya denying the claims.
The two countries have also had maritime disputes with a disagreement on which direction their border extends into the Indian Ocean.
