Nyong’o: GMO Foods Has No place In Kisumu County

Kisumu’s Governor Nyong’o opines:
Food Security and provision of sustainable foods is undoubtedly the core function of a responsible government.
This function however MUST not compromise the responsibility of ensuring that peoples’ health is protected.
The Kenya Kwanza government has unfortunately decided to play Russian Roulette with the lives of Kenyans by importing Genetically Modified maize into the country against reasoned advise from scientists.
This has been compounded by unwarranted reckless statements from some Kenya Kwanza officers.
The lives of Kenyans, our environment and the future of this nation cannot be sacrificed at the altar of self-gain for a few.
Accepting GMOs is not dealing with food security. It simply makes us impotent to grow our own organic foods which have sustained our livelihoods for centuries in Africa.
It will kill our domestic seeds industry, killing our own agriculture and making us slaves to the likes of Monsanto’s for the rest of our life.
We totally reject GMOs.
