The Kisumu County Governor, H.E. Anyang’ Nyong’o, on 11th March 2021, signed an MOU with the LAPFUND CEO, David Koros to commence the Makasembo Affordable Housing Project in Kisumu.

The event which took place at the Acacia Premier Hotel was attended by senior county officials such as Ag City Manager Abala Wanga, Lands and Urban Development CECM Dixon Obungu among others.

The county government has provided 12 acres plot of land where the housing project will be developed.

LAPFUND on the other hand will provide a total of Ksh. 3 billion for the 1,700 low-cost housing units at the Makasembo Estate which was demolished. The demolition led to the relocation of 128 households.

Governor Nyong’o termed the project as a plan towards the realization of his mission of providing affordable housing to the growing population of the city.

“Housing development is my third agenda, standing at the centre of my transformative Agenda, a guiding tool towards the development of Kisumu County while as anchored in the National Government Big 4 Agenda under the stewardship of President Uhuru Kenyatta,” said Nyong’o.

He also added that his main mission is to develop up to 10,000 housing units by the year 2025 and he plans to bring on board the stakeholders in the housing sector that have shown immense interest in the affordable housing project.

The former Makasembo Estate residents have been each compensated a total of Ksh. 196,000 and will get first priorities to buy the houses.

According to the LAPFUND CEO, the houses will be constructed in one, two and three bedrooms which will then be sold at a cost of Ksh 1.6 million, Ksh. 2.5 million and Ksh. 3.5 million respectively.
