Madaraka Day celebrations are held yearly in commemoration of the day in 1963 when Kenya gained independence from the British government.

Over the past years, counties have been hosting national holiday events on a rotational basis.

However, last year the celebrations were held online, hosted by President Uhuru Kenyatta at his official residence in Nairobi following the ban on mass gatherings in the measures that were aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19.

On 1st June 2021 Kisumu will be hosting the Madaraka Day celebrations.

The measures are already in place to ensure the national event goes on well as planned.

In his press address at Dunga Beach, Kisumu, the Nyanza Regional Coordinator, Magu Mutindika said that the event will take place at the Jomo Kenyatta International Complex Centre in Mamboleo ASK grounds which is nearing completion.

The KShs. 415 million, 30,000-seater stadium will have various sports facilities including a football pitch, rugby, tennis and hockey facilities.

Mutindika also projected that the event will boost the economy of the county as the hotel industry is set to benefit due to the high number of visitors that will be present during the celebrations.

“On 1st June, Kisumu will host the celebrations, let us prepare to welcome our guests,” said Mutindika.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, the former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga and other foreign officials are expected to be present during the event.
