The County Government of Kisumu and Morocco’s Regional Council of Rabat-Sale-Kenitra have signed an agreement of bilateral collaboration.

The memorandum of Understanding was signed on behalf of the two regional governments by His Excellency Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, the Governor of Kisumu County and His Excellency Rachid El Abdi, the President of Rabat in Rabat Morocco.

The cooperation aims to define a new framework for cooperation between the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra Regional Council and the County Government of Kisumu, which is based on the consolidation of south-south relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Kenya, decentralized international cooperation in the field of tourism investments and the solidarity economy, coping with the challenges of emerging health situations like the COVID-19 pandemic and sharing experiences of the continuous and distinct economic development achieved by the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra Regional Council with the County Government of Kisumu.

The signing of this agreement is a culmination of negotiations midwifed by the outgoing Moroccan Ambassador to Kenya, H.E Mokhtar Gambou.

In his address, President El Abdi said that as regional government, they are following the policy of His Majesty the King, Mohammed the VI, to enhance south-south cooperation and establish stable relationships between Morocco and African countries; and the desire of the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra regional council to promote the principles of good governance and work to support democracy and the path of advanced regionalization in Morocco.

On his part, Governor Nyong’o said he was impressed by the strong rooting of decentralization in the Kingdom of Morocco and what they have been able to achieve economically in the past decade of devolution.

“It is my belief that this journey of bilateral cooperation and partnership we are embarking on today through the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding will broaden and deepen the relationship between our local governments while providing a strategic framework for promoting and developing an environment of mutuality in furthering the exchange of beneficial socio-economic agenda”, said Governor Nyong’o.

The MOU was witnessed by the Principal for the Ministry of Devolution Hon. Juklius Korir who said that the Government of Kenya was committed to develop the counties as the frontiers for Kenya’s economic renewal.

President El Abdi was accompanied by the ten vice presidents from the region.
